Frequently asked questions

Bookkeepers today are responsible for providing business owners and other interested parties with accurate, up to date financial information about the business. The normal duties of a bookkeeper can include but are not limited to:

  • Processing business transactions
  • Reconciliation of ledger accounts
  • Generating accurate financial data and reports
  • Processing and reporting GST and payroll activities

An accountant’s primary task is to prepare and examine the financial records of a business, they make sure the records are accurate in relation to taxes and ensure they have been recorded and paid correctly.

An easy way to think about it is Bookkeeping is the day to day processing and recording of transactions and regular accurate reporting. Accounting is the process of analysing the transactions and reporting for income tax purposes.

Some skills required to become a bookkeeper are:

  • Maths
  • Attention to detail
  • Computer Skills
  • Good Communication
  • Willingness to learn

MATHS – Lots of potential student will comment “I’m not good with maths, I won’t be able to do bookkeeping”. Maths is important but you don’t need high level Maths (you know the E=MC squared stuff) you need to be good at analysing data. Do you find you can look at a list of numbers and pick up the wrong one! These are the skills required. Sure, there is a bit of maths involved but we teach you what you need to know.

ATTENTION TO DETAIL – Bookkeeping clients are always looking for accurate information, so ensuring the data that is entered is correct is a key skill. This also includes having ways of checking data, which we will teach you throughout your course. I like to say do you find you’re the kind of person who will double (or even triple) check everything, then bookkeeping is the career for you.

COMPUTER SKILLS – Today bookkeeping is nearly all done on computer so being confident on a computer will help, we include training in Word, Excel, MYOB and Xero in your course which we find are the top software’s being used by bookkeepers in the industry at the moment.

GOOD COMMUNICATION – As a bookkeeper you will be required to communicate with Business owners, staff, accountants and even the Australian Taxation Office. We will teach you everything you need to know so communication becomes a breeze. We ensure our students get practice by getting them to simulate communication with business owners through some assessments.

WILLINGNESS TO LEARN – The digital world is forever changing so having the attitude of being open to new skills is important. It’s not only changes in the digital world but changes to legislation and regulations that happen. Having a can do attitude and not letting changes get on top of you is ideal, we ensure we pass on up to date information so you can hit the ground running when you become qualified.

If your still worried about your skill level contact us to have a chat!

To become a qualified bookkeeper, you will need the certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping, this is the minimum qualification required to then become a registered BAS Agent. You will also find this qualification helps you to gain employment in Administration and Reception job roles. We are seeing more and more employers asking for qualifications on job advertisements now. Gaining the qualification with us will also provide other skills that will help you land your dream bookkeeping job for example Microsoft Word, Excel skills and accounting software skills in MYOB and Xero.
